LGR Book Club: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. We decided to hop on the bandwagon and see what all the fuss was about.

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo, KonMari Method

Marie Kondo is a girl after our own heart. She has been organizing since she was a little girl and shares stories from her childhood tidying mistakes all the way to stories about her clients. The main premise of the KonMari Method is to ask yourself: Does this (insert item here) spark joy? If the answer is a definite yes you keep the item, otherwise you toss it. This might seem a little extreme, but any organizer knows, the most important thing to do is purge. No matter how organized you are, your organizer can’t work their magic if you have too much stuff!

The KonMari method has proven to be quite effective and Marie Kondo proudly states that none of her clients have relapsed to their unorganized ways. She says that it is easy to stay organized once you downsize your collection of items and everything has a place and a purpose. Another important tool Marie covers in her book is folding. You might think folding has been the same for ever, but Marie explains that in order to get more use out of your items you need to store them properly and be able to see them. She likes to fold her shirts and file them vertically (see our post on this here) and the same goes for socks, underwear and stockings. We already do this with shirts, but we thought we would give it a try with our undergarments. At first it seemed a little weird to not ball up our socks, but in the end it gives a much nicer result. Lets see if we can keep it up!

The KonMari Method might not be for everyone, but the book was definitely an interesting read. Have you read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up? What did you think?
